Iron Infusion

Oriel Road Medical Centre proudly offers Iron Infusion services in our Ivanhoe clinic

An iron infusion is given to patients who have low levels of iron in their body. Iron deficiency can be a cause of numerous symptoms:

Tiredness, shortness of breath, fatigue, lack of concentration, mood swings, anxiety and palpitations(rapid heart rate).

The symptoms of iron deficiency can mimic a multitude of health issues and it is vital that other causes for these symptoms are investigated.

Our bodies need iron to make haemoglobin, which is responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood. It is also important for muscle strength, energy and good mental function. If your iron levels are low this may make you feel tired and not able to do normal daily activities.

When is an iron infusion recommended?

Intravenous iron might be needed if you are:
1. Unable to tolerate iron taken orally (iron tablets)
2. Unable to absorb iron through the gut
3. Unable to replenish iron that the body is losing (heavy periods)
4. In need of a rapid increase in iron levels to avoid complications or a blood transfusion – eg
pregnancy or surgery.

Prior to your infusion you will require a consultation with a doctor at Oriel Road Medical Centre to assess the potential causes of your iron deficiency.

If your regular General Practitioner or specialist is referring you for an iron infusion, you will need a detailed referral from them outlining the reason for your iron deficiency and your relevant past medical history – this includes any recent blood tests, gastroscopy or colonoscopy results, and a list of your current medications, allergies and past surgeries.

You will be provided with a prescription for your iron infusion. This prescription can be filled at any pharmacy and will cost around $40 (less with a concession/or pension card) Bring this to your

Prior to your infusion a cannula will be inserted into a vein in your arm. A cannula is a small needle that allows iron to be slowly dripped (infused) into your circulation. Before the infusion is commenced you will have your blood pressure & pulse measured. The infusion takes around 15 to 20 minutes. The doctor will monitor you during this time.

After the infusion you will be observed in our waiting room for a further 30 minutes. This is a time when our staff can observe any adverse reactions that you may encounter. During this time please report to our staff if you feel unwell or have symptoms of nausea, palpitations, pain or dizziness.
